The concept of an online university and what it can offer is broadening with users being able to watch and listen to live lectures, navigate virtual classrooms and even chat to their lecturers and classmates during ‘lessons’ to compare notes or even organise social meetings.
What’s the point in that when you can meet real people in real classrooms? You may ask. Isn’t university partly about meeting people and making your own way in the world?
Yes for some people, but to many people the concept of university is old fashioned. University and the opportunity to learn is not just for the young who see it as a right of passage or matter of course, it is neither just for the privileged who can afford the huge fees. Learning and the certificate that you have learned in the form of a degree, should not be elitist and monopolised by a group of a certain type of institution. Anyone who posses the intelligence and dedication and wants to work to receive those qualifications to improve their quality of life or career should have the opportunity to do so.
Unfortunately for some by the time their lives do allow them the opportunity (financially or time wise) to earn a degree the concept of moving to another area, finding a new job and devoting time to attending lectures is unthinkable.
Many people have children or full time jobs to support them selves or a family and feel that the opportunity of a degree has passed them by. Others have moved abroad but want a degree from a UK university and others just don’t want to give up the career or lifestyle that they have become accustomed to, but would like their to increase their earning power and their business potential.
Online degrees allow people to juggle full time careers and complete study in the time that is best for them. This does not diminish the value of the degree as the work and expectations from essays and assignments are just the same. The only difference is that you have another obligation alongside achieving your degree.
It is sadly true that some uninformed people may sneer at the thought of online universities yet UK universities such as University of Exeter have merged with Kaplan to offer online university courses are extremely innovative. The online courses offered in business, marketing, criminal justice and sales are entirely online and aim to replicate a real university classroom that gives you the flexibility to study from anywhere: work, home or on the move.
Don’t dismiss university if you think you couldn’t commit. Do some research and find out how your life could be added to by simply logging onto the internet. A quality resource is Kaplan Distance Learning.
